Donations and Sponsor-ships for The Bakersfield Jazz Workshop

Just a reminder to you all: The Bakersfield Jazz Workshop is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation staffed entirely by volunteers. No one who helps run our normal, weekly workshops, including the performers, gets paid. To help us with our expenses, the purchase of equipment, to provide free clinics, pay the musicians (sometimes), and scholarships, we depend upon your donations. We would appreciate it if you can make a small donation to our tip jar before you leave the workshop. (Your donation may be tax deductible – check with your tax adviser.)

You may also make a donation online using our PayPal Donatons button (see below). We appreciate your patronage and your support.

Sponsor-ship Letter

Dear Friend,

Jazz was born in the United States. With budget cuts to music programs and the lack of programs that offer the experience of learning and performing live, the Bakersfield Jazz Workshop (“BJW”), a non-profit organization, was established in 2006.  The BJW provides a venue where jazz students learn from seasoned jazz musicians and obtain performance experience in a jazz combo before an audience.  You have the opportunity to partner with us in promoting this great program and jazz in our community.

Every Tuesday night, the BJW holds a three and a half hour Workshop consisting of:

  • An hour-long beginning ensemble class, exposing players to standard repertoire and ensemble etiquette. Discussion of:  form, time, changes, key signature as necessary for each piece.

  • The second hour features a group in performance of varieties of jazz and music that jazz has influenced. This set showcases artists who all perform on a voluntary basis.

  • The final hour of the workshop features a jam session for intermediate to advanced players who perform for the love of the music and the public’s deepening appreciation of jazz.

  • Regularly, the BJW hosts “Jazz Clinics” by bringing nationally renowned musicians from the wider jazz world, as well as top notch local talent, to perform and share their expertise. These clinics offer Bakersfield music students, local musicians and the public an opportunity that might not otherwise be available to them.

  • The BJW also provides scholarships annually to those who wish to continue their musical studies either privately or at a music school or university.

  • BJW also provides students with a referral list of local experienced music teachers.

The Bakersfield Jazz Workshops are free to the public, students and musicians!

As always, there are costs associated in providing these services to the community.  Costs include equipment maintenance; the hiring of special talent and the promotion costs associated with the Clinics, and of course the scholarship funding.  We are requesting your help to support these efforts.
